Why did Jesus ascend to heaven?

What does it mean to ‘ascend’? Have you ever let go of a helium balloon and it flies off into the sky? Well it’s basically ‘ascending’, going from down here to up there. It’s a word that is also used to talk about someone ascending to the throne, like when King Charles became King. Maybe you watched his coronation? He ascended the throne. That’s how the word is used in the Old Testament too, to talk about when someone was made King or Queen. The ascension meant the day of their coronation or enthronement. In the Gospel we read that, "Jesus led his disciples out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy," This is Jesus’ ascension. He goes up, less like a balloon but sort of the same idea… and this is ALSO His coronation. What is He king of? Well, basically, everything!
